Been on a project over the last couple weekends: an entire model done with as much 3D printing as possible
Doing a take on the crashed Jeep scene in Jurassic Park where Dennis Nedry (Newman) gets killed by the Dilophosaurus after sliding off the road in the rain while enroute to deliver stolen Dino embryos to a waiting ship at the docks.




So some jeeps tried out in a few scales. Yes these are older models with round lights. Future edit: this gets modified


Four scales of Barbasol canisters that Dennis was using to smuggle the embryos out.
I only printed the cans, but the full size with internals could be made from that file.

Why did you print everything in different sizes ?

I think this is a great project - it really shows off different aspects of what you can do with a 3d printer and a bucket of creativity.

Continued trying to make everything I can with the 3D printer.
Made a windshield , headlights and a winch for the Jeep. Still have a license plate to do





Printed out some ferns in clear green resin, painted up the other plants green. Trio of more Dino’s too

So doing the clear parts with the 3d printer as well? I'm guessing that's using a clear material for the print or are there other tricks involved?

Yes just a clear resin.
I have a clear green and plain clear. Of all the resins, the clear ones print the most predictable…as the light can get through easily
It doesn’t make perfect windows, but then the bit I used for the windshield was just a raft base for something else so is quite thick.
I sanded and then did a Future dip to fill in any defects. It is going to get covered in blood inside anyways
If I had 3D design skills I suppose I could design a bespoke one proper dimensions and thinner

Printing out some hooks for the winch in different sizes again to work out the best scale
I also added some extra Agavae plants in case I needed more fill and to use the build plate up
It doesn’t take much extra resin to print more objects just time. But if there is a screw up, you have to redo the entire lot so I throw in some extra insurance in the form of duplicates and multiple sizing



Laid out with descending sizes, each reduced by half mm and duplicates for the sizes I think will be closest. Had one of the 0.5mm sizes fail to print full shape.

I am putting this one back up on the bench

I found a stl file for the yj jeep grill with the square headlights..as I am getting my azz handed to me on other sites for using the wrong jeep
Just printing out a few to scale and see if I can just add it overtop or the existing without major surgery.
It would give the jeep a bit more depth that way

I found some clear square lights in a scrap parts bin, no idea where they came from

Nice to see you back on this one mate - although it's a bit of a shame you had to redo the jeep for the sake of the headlights

But it wasn't accurate and it was quite clear that some (on other websites) would just not let that go and honestly they are correct
If I had seen the above file earlier I would have used it, so made sense to take a few steps back and make the lights square
I don't particularly like the square light aesthetic on a jeep, but that is what the movie scene used and I am making something very specific with no leeway for artistic license or variation
SO I will fix it and that is ok

This is looking great and I think will be superb when fully complete. Love the comment about the windscreen 'It is going to get covered in blood anyways' Brilliant stuff

Got the License plate made...smidge over scale so it would print out and be visible



There is a gag where Nedry runs over the East Dock sign making him get quite lost as the arrow spins 360* now


Such a sign is visible in the scene I am doing and I found a file for it so……

Adding inthe sign and re-aligning the diorama set up. I like the little Dilopho’s looking around the tree, smelling where Nedry was






Hmm this orientation with the back drop might make more sense as it allows you to line up the water washout flow on the road with the photo’s water and opens up the scene more than a long bowling alley dio.

Flocked the left side terraced hill


Then broke out the old clear silicone tube, cut off the entire nozzle to get it unplugged and blobbed some silicone water all over
Then just kept adding stuff to cover the holes and make it look like a big rainstorm

Awesome work - I really like the way you've managed to continue the flood water from the background pic into the 3D foreground - that's brilliantly done

Tried glue stick for holding the jungle flocking…see if it works as well as PVA

Ya it was super easy to apply and less mess than 3m spray or hand scooping white glue on
So far so good, seems to stick
I am busy trying to get Christmas projects off the ground at the mo so this will slow down again

I learned you can paint silicone with oils, just need to be patient to let each colour dry and then build your layers up
I think I will do water and plant spill over the wood frame edging

I am just so slow building, it takes me ages.
I am sure it all looks like the same pictures over and over

I am getting really close here. Trying to not keep showing the same photos over and over
The back and side drops are made, cut and partly installed. Cardboard backed photos glued and then stapled to the base

Just some small detail painting and a good couple focused hours to tie everything together and finish it off

Superb work Scott . The attention to detail is fantastic. I'm sure I'm not the only one looking at the photos with a big grin on their face.

The project started as a challenge to myself to 3d print a diorama topic. No pre-existing kits and no money spent of 3d files
Everything I used was available online as free stl files and I made modifications to fit my needs and scale.
I spent no money other than resin, silicone, paint supplies and time; most of that I had already in hand except the time
From a Purist viewpoint, one could say I should have printed absolutely everything, background and stand included..bugger off too fiddly, I can use existing diorama methods and materials.
There is always more I could have added…bar lights on the Jeep and LED’s to light it, denser foliage in the jungle, thick clear spray to duplicate heavy rain.
But sometimes the motivation, purpose and desire is not there

I will do a little video and post it up


3D printing is an adjunct to classic modelling not a replacement for it
