Revell SPz Marder 1A5

Tomorrow I start my new predator.
But first a few information about the original:

Following extensive trails, the "Bundeswehr" received from 1971 onward 2136 Marder 1 SPz (Marten IFV). The Marder, wich has now been for 40 jears the main combat vehicle of the Panzergrenadiere (armoured infantry), has been over the years constantly kept to date with the Bundeswehrrequrements. The latest version, Marder 1A5 is fitted with a worldwide unique protection against all existing antitank mines. In the combined fight of all arms, Marder follows the MBT's on the battle ground. The Panzergrenadiere can shoot from the inside as well as being launched outside. The fast launching and recovering of the infantry happens through the wide rear hatch. In case of necessity, the commander can use the BMK 20mm, the MG3 under the turret, or launch a Milan guided AT-missile. The Marder is fully usable for night combat. The crew includes the commander, the gunner, the driver and up to six grenadiers. The 441 KW six cylinders diesel engine allows up to 65 km/h. An important increase of the fighting capacity was started in 1989 because of the increasing danger appearing with the lastest fighting vehicles, 2097 Marders received additional armour plating and an improved turret. Known as Marder 1A3, this version includes now three hatches above the internal fighting compartment. Additional storage bins have have been fitted to the sides, the original gun ports being eliminated.
Because of the danger of mining during the crises operations, it had already been planned since 1996 to fit the Marder 1A3 with an updated protection.These changes to Mrder 1A5 began only in 2002 with the modification of 74 tanks. The modification included new track skirts made of armour steel and an improved protection against mines - the bottom was fitted with an additional armoured plating and the whole inner room was reconfigureted. These additions, which increased the total weight by 4 ton, were compensated by a new rolling gear and breaking system, as well as with new, wider tracks. Now the crew can be efficiently protectet by the fighting personnel. The battle weight of the Marder 1A5 is now 37,5 tons as compared to the 33,5 tons of the previous version. This improvement of the battle efficiency has been rapidly demonstrated in such operations as the KFOR mission to Kosovo, as well as during ISAF in Afghanistan. The first Marder 1A5 were sent to AFG in 2006. They are used for the protection of the Field Leager and in support of the Quick Reaction Force. (Revell)

I think you're right

Because most of the equipment of the Bundeswehr was never in hot use the vehicles are often underestimated.
Thanks to Schoof, also rather rare vehicles of the German Army find there way to ISM. I think I'll follow his example a bit...

Totally agree with you Kevin but in my opinion the Bundeswehr vehicles are always very interesting regardless whether they was used in (hot) action or not! I also like their look after technical service.
And you're also right concerning Schoof's Jaguar

! It's very nice to see this rare piece of german armour here on ISM

Many years ago I worked as a repairer during a maneuver with some Jaguars.Because of their shape you could hide them perfectly. I think I have to buy the kit also

Today I opened the bags and had to realize that the moldings are bent. The packaging is a bit too small for so many parts. Apart from the fact the parts look beautiful detailed. Unfortunately Revell makes the parts in green. I personally like it when the parts are light gray or in a sand color.

After I assembled the rollers, I have sanded the roller surfaces with sandpaper to get a used look.

Revell has written in the history that wider tracks were installed on the 1A5.They have probably packed tracks in the set but they have forgotten to pack wider drive sprockets!

I simply stapled the tracks together with staples .If the track cover is attached, they are no longer visible.

Hey Kevin!
I've ordered some aftermarket tracks from AFV-Club for my Marder a few weeks ago ... cos I've heard about the wider tracks I've tested their passing accuracy on the sprocket wheels and had the same problem ... they didn't fit (thought the problem only concerns the aftermarket tracks). But then I've found out, that the kid include some parts for an alternative (wider) sprocket wheel. Try the following numbers: 66, 67 and 68

I will remove from the inner gear a few teeth and then plug the whole drive gear not quite on the axis. So the external gear engages again in the right place. I hope this is covered by te track guards later

Yesterday I did a little tinkering on my kit.
The rear hatch looked like a Boomerang! Total twisted.

Yellow arrow:
The rod of the rear hatch past not in the eyes.You can shorten the rod (I did that) or widen the eyes.

I let off the flashing beacon. I do not think that it was mounted in AFG.
Yellow arrow:
I also let off the AT-missile.The grenadiers prefer the use of the weapon discontinued.The smoke from the launched missile betrays its own position. It is easier to change the position of the infantry than the tank. I also think that there are not so many enemy tanks in AFG (own experience).

White arrow:
At the cover of the sight a foot is missing.

Sadly the kit shows some annoying flaws as I can see ... it's a pity!

Oh ... I've forgotten to ask you for two points:

1. What do you think about the exterior mirrors ... are they accurate? I'm uncertain about it cos in my opinion they are looking too chunky (but I'm not definitely sure about it)

, and

2. What about the "Leitkreuz"? Is the "Balkenkreuz" asymmetric arranged, isn't it? I've noticed that on the Tamiya Marder 1A2 kit as well where the Leitkreuz look the same but I'm also uncertain about this point

First of all thanks for the praise and trust in my craftsmanship!

To the first question: There are two versions of exterior mirrors.The old with the rubber around to prevent reflektionen and a new one. The new version is in the Kit. The soldiers hated the old mirrors (me too).They were too small and became fast milky.The Landser built them off and took bigger from the trucks.The German army took over this change. Whenever a tank went to the depot, repair units changed to the bigger mirrors. So they are fine!!!!

As you will have noticed, this is an APC of GeCon ISAF. I was there in 2005.
We had no Marder in AFG at this time. Nevertheless, this is a time travel for me, when I build this kit.
And you must suffering among it.

Every now and then I'll put in a few pictures of my tour in this report.
Some say OH NO!!! But I want to. A kind dealing with the past. Do not worry about me! I have no bad experiences.

To the Image:
The top name badge is from the Bundeswehr.The lower I bought at a market in Kabul. The local told me that this is my name in Dari.
There could be something else written

like A....hole. I can not read it. If someone of you guys can read it, please tell me!!!!

At the front and rear mudflaps a few changes supposed to carry out. At the front in no case grind away highlighted areas! That would be wrong. At the rear mudflaps Revell is telling the truth.
On the left, everything went well when I sand away the plastic.
On the right side a small piece is broke away by me

The box on the engine compartment cover must be offset a bit. The white frame shows where it is supposed to go. But does not fit...

There are still some little things that I will not change. But I will speak about.

A small update!!!!

First I primed the lower chassis black and then airbrushed with sand beige.

At the rear mudflaps, the cutouts are missing (see arrows).Do not bother me, so I'll leave it is. In addition, I would also implement the reflectors.

I hope all survived New Year's Eve.
This morning I gave my tank a primer of olive green. I helped drying a bit with the hairdryer. Everything should remain olive, I masked with Play-Doh. This stuff is cheap, easy to apply, reusable and easy to peel off.

After a short dry phase, I peeled the masking down again.I'm quite happy with the result.

Unfortunately, I must also point out an error in the kit again...

The enclosed side aprons (Is aprons right??? I am not shure

) are both for the left side.
Thus the step left forward and right backwards (see arrow)

work starts at the 13th again for me so i have some time and building models and playing pc games becomes a bit boring. a 6 hour drive is something i do not really mind.

Last night I found some time to work on my Marder. I've decided to place two soldiers on the tank. Trumpeter has a kit that fits to the tank. Almost!!!!

The kit "Modern German ISAF soldiers in AFG" shows soldiers from the year 2006. Do I value.
Why this estimate I'll explain later...

The kit includes decals, so you can save a large part of the painting. I've tried it and must say who has time and would like annoy, then you can create a very good result. It took me about two hours for an upper body.I came to the decision too paint them ...

Why do I believe that the figures-kit shows soldiers from around 2006?

The bulletproof vests!

When I was in AFG 2005, we had the green one. Our tank driver had the olive.
The grenadiers had sand-colored (right center).
At the bottom left is the newest of the Bundeswehr. They was given to the soldiers of the battle groups about 2006.
Unfortunately, the Marder was sent later to AFG. I use the soldiers of the kit anyway ...

Superb job Kevin, the camo looks fantastic, i don't think i would buy another Revell kit unless i read here it was a good one, you have turned this into a masterpiece, and is there any chance of you guys meeting in Dublin instead

Should use Osprey molle armour, that stuff looks the dogs dog's dangly bits!

My armored animal is just in the drying chamber and I thought,I show the two soldiers, who are employed on the tank.
I admit, the photo are a little overexposed, thus you only see little details

On the front I have attached a recovery cable in order to guarantee a quick recover in the damage case.
I made the cable from a piece of package string.

The first and last vehicle in a column are always the best armored. A outage of the first vehicle is forcing the column to stop.The last vehicle covers the other vehicles to quickly approaching attackers.The AFV is a rear vehicle. The sign shows that a distance of 100m is to be followed.

To loosen up the scenery a bit, I have placed a few magazines, a poster and a calendar on the tank.
