Bf109F vs 109 G

You may have to be a closet rivet counter to know this but....

apart from the bigger cooling scoops and a fuel filler relocation, does anyone know of any significant visual changes between the F series and the G-2?

also, does anyone know where I can find pictures of said scoops?

Arrghhh! I wish I had never asked now, all I wanted to do is see if I could get away with using an F2 as a G2 but this is all too much information!

Main external differences were as you say, small scoops on the engine cowling for the spark plugs.

Seen here (small scoops between the spinner and main scoop on the blue band).


The wheel wells had squared off ends as well


And I believe the prop blades were "fatter" than on the F series.

The G versions had some differences in the cockpit. For example some late Gs as the G-10 used a special 'Erla' canopy, looks a bit different, but that's not important for a G-2. The G-1 was the first Bf 109 to utilize a pressurized cockpit, the G-2 lacked it though. Only difference is that the G-2 could be equipped with various additional weapons (Rüstsätze). If they mounted one though, a 'R' suffix was added to the designation, such as G-2/R2 (reconnaissance aircraft).

Mainly small differences in armament and engine ventilation, but it all depends on what sub-variant of the '109 F or G you're trying to build; each one had about 6 sub-variants.

Read through these articles and that should give you an idea.

I think I can probably get away with it , I'll try adding the extra scoops (one just below the front of the canopy as well I believe)

Something above and behind the exhaust appears to have moved upwards, I'm not sure how important that is. My 'Friedrich' does not have the under wing cannon gondolas and so the adding the scoops should be enough methinks

Yes, it shouldn't matter at 1/72 I hope.

As long as it doesn't come up against any rivet counters it should be fine
