Revell 1:72 Heinkel HE 111 H6

hi guys and girls
this will be the build thread on my revell HE 111 H6 in 1:72 scale
this will be my second entry in this group build as i have completed the first
and during my visit to the hobby shop i spotted this kit at a great price so i just had to take it home
and this is a very different kind of plane then the Halifax i made for the previous entry so it should be intresting to build and hopefully for you aswell

so let's start with the specs of this bomber

crew: 5 persons
a pilot
b navigator/bombadier/nose gunner
c ventral gunner
d dorsal gunner/radio operator
e side gunner

lenght : 16,4 meters / 53 foot 9,5 inch
wingspan : 22,6 m/74 ft 2inch
height :: 4 m/13 ft 1,5 inch
wing area 87,60 m2 / 942,92 ft2
weight empty 8680 kg / 19136 lb
weight loaded 12030 kg / 26500 lb
maximum take off weight 14000/30864 lb requires rocket assistance to take off
power plant : 2 Junkers Jumo 211 f-1 or 211 f-2 liquid cooled inverted v12 engines
power output : 2x1300 hp for the f-1 or 2x 1340hp for the f-2

preformance
max speed : 440 km/h or 273 mph
range 2300 km / 1429 miles
service ceiling 6500 m / 21330 ft
rate of climb : 20 minutes to reach 5185 m / 17000 ft

armament
7 xmg15 or mg81 in calibre 7.92 (standard german rifle and mg round of the time)
bomb load :
internal 2000kg/4400lb in 8 bombracks the bombs are standing on there back (nose pointing up)
external 3600kg/7900lb this can be either 2 bombs or 2 torpedo's this method blcks off the internal bomb bays so they can't be used
the external load also increases drag so it will limit the speed and range of the plane


history
the plane began it's life in the desing room of the Heinkel factory
where suppliers and personel was told they where working on a high speed passenger/transport plane
but most saw that this loked like a plane that was to be used in the airforce
this was not allowed ofcourse since the Germans where under the strain of the Versailles treaty wich didn't allow for a airforce
there was a civilian version of this plane wich was a very fast plane in the 1930's
this bomber had several versions wich where all used by the German Luftwaffe from the start untill the end of the second world war
some types where also exported to Spain wich had a fasist regime at the time
the plane was put out of service in 1945 as Germany surrendered
the spanish airforce kept it in service for about a decade after the war

for my sources i used both the info given by revell and Wikipedia


and now for the kit
the kit comes in the well known side opening box that is almost a revell trademark
wich is to bad since you need another box to store the sprues in between building sessions
the box art


the sprues themselves come in 2 heat sealed bags

everything comes in this big bag this is also my proof it is a new kit
the clear parts are in this bag aswell but are packed in there own little bag

then the instructions come out of the box
and unlike most manufacturers this also holds the decal sheet wich is pretty big for the scale
the decals look god and as Lee Always says nice and in register (hope Lee doesn't mind me quoting him)
they are not completly flat/matt but i can't really call the satin either so something in between



this is the instruction book
it is a plain black and white printed stack of folded a3 sheets really
but all the instructions are clear and easy to follow
it also holds the paint and marking drawings


there are callouts for 4 versions of the plane so enough choise
the booklet also has the paint call outs wich i cut out for eaze but these are in revell colors only

here are the clear parts

they are not the best but they are nice and clear so no misting and that kind thing
also the lines are very nicely defined

these are the big sprues

they look nice and there is almost no flash

a close up of the wing to show the panel lines
wich look good in my opinion


some of the smaller parts
there is some flash on these but it is minimal
there is some burring on the proppelor blades but this pretty usual (as i have seen it in most reviews)
but should clean up fine with a sanding stick


more small parts


then there are these parts wich are a bit different since they don't have the same color as the rest but they look to be okay

so as i sayed this is the first update
i just followed the the instructions as i don't think i should work ahead since i don't have much experiance with planes
as always the build starts with the cockpit and the interior of the plane
and this is where i'm at right now





so i haven't done that much to it yet
all these parts are primed and i'm waiting for the paint to be applied
then i will do some dry brushing and a wash to finish the interior
but it needs to dry first
and i have other builds aswell one of these is my entry in the steel rain sig and i told Carlos/reelmesh i have a layout of the diorama i'm making for that this weekend
so that will take up some time but i used gypsum and it has long drying times for the glue so i can work on this build in the meantime

and easyeight it could be that the last sprues are indeed not made by revell but all the other sprues have revell markings
but i'm not sure on that as i did no research on this kit

hi guys
here is another little update
i have been working on this build in between sessions on my other build wich is for the steel rain sig so there is abit more of a time crunch on that on
but as i'm building the dio for that i have long drying sessions for both the plaster and the glue wich gives me some time for this build
now there is not a whole lot of progress but there is some never the less
and here it is

this is the inside of the fuselage
this is painted with a coat of Vallejo olive grey wich should be the right color but i'm not entirely sure since the call outs are for revell paints
then i used some dark wash wich i left to dry for about a hour or so
then i used some thinner to remove the excess
finally i did some scratching with gunmetal paint and a sponge


the cockpit
the seat and controlstick where painted seperate
i also used a bit of pigment here for the green surfaces
for this i used fading allied green by mig not to get a dusty look but more to get some color changes


here i a shot of the finished cockpit with all the weathering to it
the wings are glued at this stage but not to the fuselage that is a dry fit
the fuselage itself is glued aswell i just used strips of masking tape to hold it sll in place
this kit fits well in my opinion as i don't think i will have to fill any holes on the fuselage
it could be that the left wing does need some putty but i'll see that when i get to it

so that's all for now
i'll try to make a bit bigger update next time as my other build should be a lot farther completed and i'll have more time for this one

i want to finish the steel rain build.first and then get back to this
amd this is a pretty easy build although i'm masking all the windows wich is a bit tedious
but she will be done before the end of the gb

if it is already on the radar just go for it
this kit is not that expensive looks pretty good out of the.box and has a lot of detail on the exterior
if you want.a better one if think the 1:32 version that benc123 is building is a option although about 4x the price of this one
or some upgrades maybe
all i havr voming in for this are some window masks as i'm too lazy to cut my own plus i save some time
now i just need to finish my steel rain build and i'll get back to this one

and i don't know about the airfix kit but i do have the old italeri kit
i does fit but has raised panels so that was a no go for me
but this is a good kit for the price

hi guys
just a little update
i have finished the building part of this kit (mostly there are some loose parts)
and i have to say that altough revell claims this is a level 4 (advanced modeller) kit it is a easy and fast build
the kit has just a few parts that need some sanding to get the seems away but that is all
the instructions have about 25 steps so not that many either
so here are the photo's of the heinkel as she sits right now


this the plane before priming it
all that is missing are the bombs ,props and the landing gear wich i left of for ease when painting
the masking is a mix of tamiya tape and a eduard set wich was for the italeri kit but i got it for 2 euro so i thought i would give it a go so there are some corrections
the big plug of tape is sitting in the hatch over the pilots seat as the thing can be opened so that is seperate aswell


the remaining parts


here are the loose parts after priming
i used ak primer after i had the advice around here that it is better than Vallejo (and it is)
also i did some sloppy pre shading on the bombs


and the bird itself
this is also primed and pre shaded

so i think this is the end of this update
next time i will do the paint as that is a bigger job then this was

good day gentlemen
so i finally have a new update on the heinkel
i was working on and off on this , taking small steps each time but now i have enough progres for a update
last time i did the masking priming and pre-shading (not my strong point)


so i started off with the painting of the clear parts wich aren't primed
for this i used the interior color
also the fuselage color was sprayed on the upper gunners position before i glued it in place (not sure if i mentioned it before)


here is a picture with all the color applied
i had pics of the first 2 steps but i seem to have lost them on my Phone wich i use for a camera
but i started with tamiya flat white on the engines tail rudder and the band just in front of the tail
these had 24 hrs to dry and then where masked
for the rest of the bird i used the method Paul explained in the technique guide (thanks for making them)
so first i sprayed the rlm71 on there (the lighter green),free hand and left that to dry for a while
then these patches are masked and the rlm70 black green was sprayed
this paint covers very well a bit to good even as all pre shading was lost in the dark area's


the paintjob from above
also my handy work is visible here as i knocked the right sides mg in to the plane so i can consider that one lost


and the bottom

some parts are painted seperate such as the bombs and props
the gear had the same seperate paintjob as these parts but was glued in place once the paints where dry enough to be touched
the props in the following photo's are just friction fitted to show how it all should look
i did some post shading aswell but that still is very hard/almost inpossible to see the lighter green shows it very well
so here is the heinkel before the last details and the weathering are done











and while checking the pics i found that the navigation light mask is still on there

but that is all i have for now guys
i hope to finish this one soon but i will see how it goes

Hello Mark,

My second model build was a Airfix BF109E-4 and it didn't include the Swaztika in the decals or the box art, but did when I was a teenager. This is what I did to overcome the issue; I ordered me some Aeromaster assorted decal scales and sizes, took an old photo showing a side view of the tail and measured the width and height of the tail on the photo, then measured the width and height of the tail on my model. I divided the two to get a scale, then measured the Swaztika width in the photo and used my devised scale to get a measurement for the width I needed from my Aeromaster Decals. It looked pretty close to me when comparing my model to the photos after the decals were applied.

i think i can work with it
but i thought that somebody might know the size in mm
because the decalsheet has the in about 10 different size with the real life size mentioned
it will be ok i think

but i'm no plane builder yet
i think that it looks good with my skills atleast i'm happy with it
but the.kit had a small mistake as the front part of the cockpit had a bad fit
and that caused it that some glue went inside and frosted the glass a bit (bummer)
but she is all decaled up so the end is near

good evening gentlemen
so here i have the final update on my heinkel build
last time i painted and clear coated the bomber so now it was time for some decals
unlike the decals i had with my Halifax wich was a revell kit aswell these decals are very nice
i did find that the white band i painted on (hard to mask) was availble as a decal but the fit is almost never as good as paint
but enough jabbering it is time for some pictures



as i mentioned these decals are very good in my opinion as most of the times they did need a bit of micro sol to get the down
but only a little bit
after this was dry i used some micro set to get really stuck on the surface
and then it received a new coat of clear to top it off
and before i forget the swastika's are not in the kit these are from a loose sheet of decals





here you can see how good the decals are formed to the shapes in the wing
also the entire plane has been given a wash
for this i have used mig production washes
dark wash is used for the upper part of the plane on all the green surfaces
neutral wash is used for the white area's
and brown wash is used on the bottom of the bird this was the best color for the job according to mig altough i had some doubts about this i gave it a try because i can remove it if i didn't like it but after i used some white spirit to wipe all the excess wash from the surfaces
i used the mig offer for this but i have this bottle for a while but others can be good i guess
i use toilet paper to remove the wash this because it absorbs very well and dirt cheap

as i final step i glued on the prop's and bombs to prepare for the matt varnish
this is from Vallejo and thinned with Vallejo airbrush thinner and against my expectations it did the job with just 1 coat
so that is all i have about this build
for more photo material there should be a reveal very soon

Wow....I love it! There's something about the German Luftwaffe planes and their many camouflages that draw you to them?

When I finish my Mossie, I think I'm going to build me a German bomber, I've always loved the HE.111, I love the Stuka and the JU88, too.

Look forward to the final reveal!

in all honesty it did turn out better then i expected so i'm happy with it
