ICM 1/48 Sd.Kfz.222

Post by chief5437 »

So my GB kit arrived today, yey!
It's smaller than I was expecting too!

A few firsts for me;
First 1/48 armour
First winter paint scheme
First time building a base for it to sit on
Oh yeah, and first group build, lol!

Let's get on with the show!

Oooh, another first.

It's my first kit that doesn't have any part numbers on the sprues! :eeek:
Glad it's a simple build

Well, after reading some terrible reviews of this kit I was starting to get worried. But I really can't see what's wrong with it!

There's some tiny bits of flash on a few bits, but nothing to worry about.

A couple of weird things are the lack of numbers on the parts, but 'cos the kit is so basic, it's not hard to see where things go.
The other being the lack of 'standard' locating pins. They're either not present, or small locating 'lugs' that are quite baggy so there's a lot of play in positioning.

There are some small ejection marks, but they're in places you probably won't see (under side of mud guards) so not really an issue.

I consider all the above minor problems, that you see in every kit to some degree. I certainly aren't going to worry about them!

There's some nice detail on the axles, stowage and even some PE grills, but I'll probably add a few scratch bits. Only basic stuff like towing cables, antennas and the obligatory large blanket roll thing!:

So far, things are going together swimmingly :thumb1:
Fingers crossed, the rest will be the same!

On, on!

A bit more progress.
The spare wheel comes moulded under a cover, with no detail.

I wanted to show it as if the canvas cover had been ripped, revealing the wheel beneath.
As I don't have any spare armour wheels, I found an old wheel from a tamiya F-15, perfect size!
The hub is obviously different to the 222's but as it'll only be partly shown I think it should work.

I covered the wheel in a thin foam sheet, then picked strips out to simulate the torn canvas. I think it looks like it'll work, but I guess I'll have to wait till its finished to be sure. Fingers crossed!

So that's the main assy done. I've added scratch tow cable, width warning indicators, stowage rack, antenna and last but not least, the rolled up tarp that's standard issue to all model vehicles! Lol!

Lets go warm the compressor up, beeches!!!

Finally got some work done tonight!

Did some hairspray wear on the winter wash. Another first for me!

Added some rust and streaks, which you can't see now!

Oh, if you get this kit, beware the decals. Literally 20 seconds in water and they start falling apart! NO scope for movement once on the kit!

I'm intending to put this on a small display. Although these veh were designed for armd recce, I've found that they were commonly used as taxis for Staff Officers and the like.

So I'm going to try and put it in a scene in Norway or Denmark (part of the war that I think is sometimes overlooked). Along the lines of 'Officer in the mess having a beer, while the driver is freezing his behind off, out in the snow'

Only tried painting 1/35 figures once before (not pretty!) so wish me luck doing 1/48!

Good to have you on the GB build Chief. Yeah! I have the same problem with models. You get a big box and find the model has shrunk. But I don't do well with small. I'm sure your going to do a fine job.

Have fun! Looking forward to seeing what is builds into. Built the Tamiya 1 35 vintage kit a year ago. Really could've used some PE for the anti-grenade screen, but I made the kit stuff work.

Right then, quick sitrep

Got the figures done. Many thanks to Guppy for the tutorial. I think they came out alright, I had a few problems getting the skin tone I wanted, as I only have revell flesh colour. But I should get away with it as they're only 1/48 so it doesn't look too bad (from a distance)! Lol

I've made a start on the base. A piece of timber covered with DAS modelling clay (oh my, another first!) I used various sizes of deformed copper pipe to create a cobbled look. Then I built up a small pavement and gave it some texture with a rough sponge.

So far, I'm quite pleased with how it looks. But I'm starting to think it may be a bit out of scale!?

Time will tell. If its too big I'll stick some 1/35 stuff on it and make a smaller one.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback.
I wanted a cobble shaped pattern but couldn't think of what to use. Then I was fitting a boiler at work and found some beat up bits of pipe in my van, hey presto! Just what I needed!
I should thank Hamilcar for the air clay tip, I saw him use it in one of his videos for a field base.

Thanks again!

Like I was saying earlier, I think I've made this base a bit over scale.
I've taken pics with 1/48 and 1/35 figures on it to show what I mean.
I think it's better for 1/35, what do you guys think?

The air clay was buy 2, get one free. I only used one packet for this so it's no drama to make another. Just have to find something small enough to make the cobbles!

I thought so! Cheers. It was actually 8 and 15 mm pipe I used. I could maybe use the 8 mm for large stones, and find something smaller for the rest?! I'll have to have a rake round in the van, lol!

Thanks for the input Paul.

Looks fantastic! Shame about the cobbles being a little too large but keep it to one side for a later build. I do love the way you've used bits of old pipe - recycling at it's best!

Thanks. I've got a 1/35 Dingo in the stash, so I reckon that could go on it instead.
Since getting back into modelling, one of my favourite bits is finding stuff at work and I think 'what could I use this for on a model?'
I've got bags of moss from behind gas fires, foam and cloth bags that shower valves come in, (for model tarps/blankets) all sorts of electrical wire and cables. I've even got a bag of those tiny black seeds you get on bread rolls! You never know!!! Ha ha!

Quick update on the base.
I've made a another, but this ones a bit smaller. This time I used an old paint brush with the bristles pulled out, and a piece of plastic tube with the end slightly melted.

I think it turned out alright, what do you guys think, a bit more to scale?

Although its a smaller base it took twice as long, sooo boring! Lol

Thank god for 'smarter every day' YouTube channel!
