It's not modeling as we know it!

Post by PugmooG »

I have started this thread following on from my post In "Did you have any non modelling goodies delivered" as it seemed the best place for it. Got myself a 3D Printer.

This is my first attempt at 3D printing at home, based on my own 3D models. This is a test piece I knocked up at work. As soon as the job has run I will post pics of the finished piece.

Image

Back at home and here's the print just starting, but it's gonna take a long time!

Image

I have a few more Ideas. Bespoke stuff for Dioramas, Kits, Tools etc. If anyone is interested? I'm even going to try to knock this up an E-Type Jaguar (Very long term project!)

Image

I will try to keep up with this as much as humanly possible (Work permitting) It's mainley for my own pleasure. But you know when you want or need that lost or broken peice, maybe a bespoke tool that you just can't get of the shelf. Please feel free to comment or add to :cheers2:

Oh well a bit of a disaster, made a booboo with the code, hence the missing finger.

Image

Bit o flash there LOL, good job I got some ISM sanding sticks.

Image

But not a bad result given it's my first home print. Going to try some Primer Filler Spray see if I can get the finish any smoother. Dimentions are height 80mm width 75mm.
And it took 2 hr's 8 min's to print, on slow settings as I'm still getting to grips with the setup. I hope to cut that time down with some tweeking to the configuration.

I'd say an interesting first test run, looking forward to seeing further experiments :) Good Luck!

Hi Guys. Time for a quick update. I had a look back at my old work and found this.

Image

It's an old low poly model(low detail) I was developing for game about 10 years ago. A good model for a 3D print.

After a little tweaking.

Image

I removed Quads(Polygonal Surfaces) where the glass is to go, and just a tidy up.

Image

Onto the breakdown ready for a 3d print. I'm still working on the breakdown of the parts! I will do a test print of the wheels first, and will post results.

Image

Thanks for looking, all comments/questions very welcome
Cheers :th: Aidy :th:

Hi there,

Han Solo here from the 3D Panzer.
Looking good! Will watch the Fire Truck developing.
I've been out of wifi for 2 whole days! :-(
Catching up now.

I had some serious bad luck with my Panzer. My laptop crashed and corrupted the 3D file!!
I had to start all over again!!
After a day or 2 I picked up the courage to do so. And I'm almost where I was a few days ago.

Wil be posting on my thread soon.

cheers
Cheers

Good stuff mate. Looks like you're using Autodesk 3Ds Max software, I've been using Solidworks since 1998 and dabbled with Pro-Engineer but didn't find it as user friendly as SW.

I worked on the design and development of the Z-Corporation 3D printing machines; Z350, Z450 and the Z650. The company was acquird by 3D systems a few years ago.

Below are two images of a Lego style race car that I printed off, back in 2007, next to my 1/48 scale Typhoon to give you an idea of scale...16" long by 7 1/2" wide. I only used three colors, but the machines are capable of doing multiple colors and they've come a long way since 2007.

Look forward to seeing you do more with your desktop printer!

Hi UKguyInUSA,

Thanks mate, yeah I work in games software, 3D Artist/Modeller. When I have some down time this is what I get up to. Yes the screenshots are from 3DS Max 2015 at work, I have 2013 at home. I also use Mudbox, ZBrush, and Photoshop etc.
Top noch resolution on your prints, I'm guessing the printers you work on are a little bit out of my price range :doh:Great work on the Typhoon, nice camo job. I have had a dabble with Solid Works and Auto Cad, I intended to work as a Design Engineer many years ago! :cheers2: for the reply :th:

Here's the the next model I'm going to test print. I have left the extra geometry for any extra detail I may wish too add. Still tweaking the printer settings to get the best results (detail v speed).
I'm thinking of separating the hub section from the the tyre section in order to give a construction element to the finished piece!?

Image

I will post as soon as it's done!? Maybe  Thanks for looking guys as always any comments, questions etc. :th:

Yeah, thanks for that! I did turn on the autosave after the crash.
Now I have multiple documents to choose from whenever something goes boom. ;-)
