Got a bit of a dog of a kit...a.k.a. Airfix woes....

Post by Roland »

I recently bought this along with a couple of other kits over an Internet Auction. (Again, sorry for the darker pics)

I was actually looking forward to building this (yes, I am a bit of a masochist) and I have a bit of a problem.

First off some pics:

I believe this is currently Lee's favourite Company..... :nena:

Quite a few pieces:

And now my Issue. I am fully aware that "Airfix" and "perfect fit" are contradictory terms, especially when it comes to the old kits but this is just ridiculous:

The question here is: Is there any way I have a snowballs chance of saving this Kit? I would actually like to build it up and make something nice but those gaps are just plain scary. I was playing with the idea of letting the warped side sit in a tub of really hot water to make it more pliable, but I have no idea if that would work.

Anyone have any bright ideas? or should I just bin it or make a Diorama with half a plane?:

Hi,

The idea of a crashed plane is nice but ask at least as much work as the one of building the kit...

If you try to glue everything in force is it ok?

Maybe if you put some laod on it will it put the half fuselage right?

Good luck
Bruno

I dry fitted it but no matter which parts I push together there is always a part that stands away. Also the fuselage does not meet up perfectly, it would seem as if the one side is more curved than the other.

I was thinking of building the plane halves seperately and mounting them on a board :D Might just do that if nothing else works.

If you lay the two halves on a flat surface, do they assume a "banana" shape? If so, I'd be tempted to put them on a baking tray (when my wires not looking) with a heavy book on top and try a VERY low oven setting. HOWEVER if you burn your house down don't blame me.

One side does, the other is ok, hence the idea of putting the knackered side into very hot water :)

Don't know if my wife would be chuffed by the oven idea, must try and get her out of the house over the weekend :D

I hope not, on the other hand I have managed to successfully hide my stash of around 36 kits from her until now :D :D

We will see I guess ;)

How on earth did you manage that? cloaking device? Bowl of hot water would be the first thing to try I guess.

Try hot water and gradually glue the halves together move about an inch at a time and wait fir the glue to cure before doing the next inch.

Sorry, your wife is hiding something like four hundred sets of shoes. She knows about that stash but is keeping this information as back up just in case you stumble onto her stash :nena: They always know.

Without hot water thats what I'd do, hold the parts together a bit at a time and let Tamiya extra thin do its job, Tamiya thin glue or any modern glue like that.
