"Frozen blood" diorama 1/35 scale

Post by HamilkarBarkas »

It´s been a while since i made a winter diorama, it was time again! The season is right.
The diorama shows a StuG III F8 on the march through the steppes of the Eastern Front in March 1943. The thawing reveal the remainings of the battles fought all over the winter 1942/43.
The tank model is an old kit from Gunze Sangyo from 1995 (the old Dragon Panzer III and StuG III kits are based on this one). Despite the age still a nice kit which can look pretty nice. I only added photo-etched engine grills and few resin stowage boxes apart from the ordinary stowage i place on tank models. The Maxim machine gun is from ICM, detailed kit but there is only one gun included. The crew figures are from Verlinden, the dead soldier is made out of several left-over pieces from various manufacturers.
The mud was created with earth from my garden and gloss varnish. For the mud puddles i used cast resin. For the snow i used a modelling snow powder called "Rast Deranauo".
I painted everything with acrylic paints from Revell. Oil paint washes were used for weathering. I want to emphasise that not a single grain of pastel pigments was used for the project.

Again.... The mud master calls!
That is freaking superb work Michael. No pigments eh? That was an interesting choice. I'm curious as to why you didn't use them. It's obvious that you didn't really need them, maybe that was why.
Nice use of that Maxim and the soldier. I had similar plans for a future diorama with a few figures.
Excellent and inspiring work my friend.

I especially like the mud and puddles and weathering on the tank...
Very realistic, and the figure reminds us of the harshness and reality of war...
