Yep this will probably start after the Sci-fi sig has ended - There's a lot going on now and we don't want people to feel under pressure to do their modelling - It stops being fun then

Crap. You're so right about WWI being almost neglected buy kit companies.
Sad but true. Makes it challenging though.
I'll enjoy watching this. Maybe I'll jump in as a late start once I clear some of my bench.

it is a shame that it is sidelined as not only is it such an important event in our histories of our country's from a modelling point of view and specifically for us diorama builders it has plenty of inspiration for very dramatic projects. Also I have a family connection to the battle of Mons so it is something I would very much love to model some day

I have my fingers crossed that next year the companies will use the 100th anniversary as marketing to release loads of new stuff. Airfix usually have a historical event for example in 2011 Pearl Harbour etc. But we can only wish

I'll be there for that one. I am sure that lots of new kits will surface in the next few months leading up to Aug 2014 and beyond - e.g., the new Meng French FT-17 tank in 1/35 (out now), Master Box 1/72 male and female british MK1 tanks from 1916 (just announced) and lovely 54mm figures from Tommy's War

This SiG will start on the 18th July and run until 10th Oct, although the rules haven't been finalized yet I would guess if it was in action during the period of the Great War then it will be eligible. So all those early tanks, revolutionary aircraft, dreadnought battleships, horse drawn artillery, cavalry and trench bound infantry will be suitable. So you have just over a month to decide on and source your build this will be interesting and fun!
