Yo Ho!

Finally got back on sail with this one.
We have watched the first three Pirates of the Caribbean series over dinner on the weekend.
They were sure hard on the Pearl, poor girl

Anyhows, the decks are glued together, the cannons in on the lower deck.
I had them at the extended position first, but kept bumping into them and it didn’t seem realistic to be traipsing around the ocean with your cannons dangling out your hull





I test fit with the sides etc to see that we are close before gluing

You're probably best sticking to the first 3 films only. I would be happy with just the first movie. I thought they went downhill pretty quickly after the original. The first movie was an awesome film.

I have only seen bits a pieces of any of the movies, never sat and watched the entire movie but know the gist of the stories
Really enjoyed them and found I could figure things out and help explain to others

Nice work on the decks & pulling the hull together - it's starting to look the right ship shape

Some slow progress on The Pearl

Lower part of hull primed light brown to allow weathering and darker layers


Sides are just being added, deck to cement later



Details on the upper decks getting tan primed and then a burnt umber oil paint ontop to give a deep chocolate brown. Black oil then splotched over and areas of use will be wiped lighter. Made a rope for the wheel and modified the base with holes.

Resin printing some deck details. Made some barrels and some wooden crates.
Had some fails and warpage, but some perfect ones too

Then trying to alter the captain’s quarters with proper double doors, windows and female column supports

The ship wall and door does look rather anemic and I can see why you would want to improve it.
Great find with the column file if there is one for that there must be numerous window and door files as well.

I have to laugh at myself. I could not imagine a female column support. I was like, all the columns I can think of would be called a male column support if anything. LOL! Chemo brain sucks.

I messed with the column file and thickened up the girls a bit in the z axis
Then I duplicated them until I had twelve. That way I should at least get a couple useful ones



Then the window frames. I did two different sizes


Now I had to cut out the windows on the wall. This was fun






I framed them out with thin styrene just to clean things up. Everything will get painted dark


Also printed out a mess of bells for the bridge. Every one looks like it printed fine, just cleaning them up. I only needed one
Messed up my barrel size as they came out much larger than the previous set

S-load of Bells= seven
The window frames cleaned up
My mermaid girl columns are in the top left corner drying with some filler on their backs to smooth the support trims off


I am glad I printed so many bells as they are thinner than paper and just evaporate in your hands
Got one trimmed off and primed the interior. This is what it will look like sitting inside the support. I will have it hanging from a rope


Then the window frames got primed gelb and then oil painted burnt umber




I am done, just exhausted for the night

Really nice work on that wall. Terrible effort from the kit manufacturer but the new stuff is a real rescue job.

Then my conscience just couldn’t bear with it so boring
The bell is a controversy as I cannot find it in film pics, but the frame looks cool and I found a bell, so….

It is so cool to just mess around and print your own parts
Now everything is not exact, I am not at full on 3D design capability , but you can see I get the gist of the real Pearl here.
There is so much variation on the references for this ship. I have seen one sided and open sided compass cabinets and I have seen no cabinet at all the same for the ships bell

That is ok as I was going to re-print them and now can make them a tad larger now I know how to do that

At this moment, I am liking this kit.
The surface detail is really amazing and it really pops with a thin spray of yellow gelb primer and then oil paint
It is a pain as it takes longer for the paint to dry, but the pigments of oils are just awesome
Here is the row boat painted and drying on the deck



I ripped out the compass cabinet and cut it open through and through as it was bugging me
Repainted and glued up it is drying as well waiting for front and back clear acrylic

These staircase railings will never do. The balusters are wrong and the bottom doesn’t curve correctly inward
They have the right shapes for the supports at the top rail, not sure why they went boring straight for the staircase

I know you love the bell, but my recollections of a ships bell was more like the size of a persons head and had a rope attached for ringing it and was located at head level......please don't shoot the messenger good ones are hard to find...

Ya no worries
There is no clear one version with the Pearl and the bell was never a large figure in any of the movies…so it gives me leeway
Currently trying to figure out a jig to wind my own sisal fiber ropes

I did some hand winding of rigging rope and then re-wound the ship’s wheel
This is painted wire that didn’t hold its twist

If you want I can go look in my 2 books on ship modeling... I think they had a few home solutions... and instead of jute fibers you can buy the actual rigging material in ship models individually at a few shops... like sunward hobbies if I remember. They are in Ontario

Try wetting the jute fibre's first it should make them much stronger.
