I have done a good deep dive into this and have a few hand cranked ideas
It is fascinating really how they made rope in old times
I want just a simple jig. My tests with jute fibers show it snaps easy. I need to find some hemp

Try wetting the jute fibre's first it should make them much stronger.

More of me going off the deep end for this build. Been thinking about this all work day
My 3d printer is down with need to replace the FEP which is on order, so went old school

First try : I resin casted the spindles for the staircase


These are crap. Poor shape and weak. Fail.

Second attempt : The Dremel lathe. Using resin supports from a 3D print as stock. Wearing a N95 mask doing this and working into a wet cloth for dust control
Mine may be a bit rounder , but I can square them off with sanding once spun

Ok yes this will work

That very bell was one of the stl files I looked at to print out...would have just sanded off the lettering but I found a smooth one

Heading into a four day weekend, thank god
I took some time over the last two nights to make some balusters for the hand rails
I went old school and lathed them by hand on my makeshift lathe Dremel drill



There are three materials here: Anycubic clear resin, styrene (airfix I think) and Anycubic craftsman grey



The left side clear ones are the best to work with and have nice crisp detail. I only broke a couple of them during fabrication
The styrene is slow to cut and felt soft and mushy. Didn’t break but swore it would
The last grey ones are brittle and I broke a good six or so of them

So I have a long weekend to sort out the 3D printer and it have a baluster file
I may print some out, will see how my time goes

Edit: I am up to 24 now. I am going to try and 3D print some more and see how they go
I really like using a lathe, quite fun and the time just melts away

Very clever stuff with that staircase. Fascinating

Exactly what I want
Ebay had an old jeweller’ s lathe on it and sent me a ‘% less offer’…it was tempting
It was old, which I like refurbishing old tools as they are well made
It had no motor which is a relatively easy fix.
But one of the spindles that holds the drive belt had a huge chunk out of it

That would mean it would likely run unbalanced, no longer have that speed and was likely dropped to do the damage
Not really conducive to fine lathe work
It had too many red flags for me, and it was the deal breaker but I will keep looking
Besides how many round things does one need? I can 3D print just about anything now

I was thinking the same thing. The printed ones will all be exact. The hand carved ones are all slightly different
Once they are painted up and weathered, they will all just blend

Shame about that one , but you probably did the right thing.
Round things abound, but you then get a mill and the world is your tea cup.....

Great result with all the add-ons and replacement parts. This is all miles away from my wheelhouse but no less fascinating for it

Wow, that is impressive!

Progressing on the new new railing
Helps to be a dentist stupid enough to try drilling fine holes through tiny things and using root canal files to expand them
The guide brass wire helps hold things roughly in place and keep alignment while I curse

Both sides railing supports roughed in, working on hot water bending styrene hand rails

You're doing an incredibly job.

I'd be furious with the kit though. That level of missing detail would really hack me off. Its great to see you overcoming the problems, bravo mate.

It is actually a pretty good kit and can build quite nicely out of the box
But I am a yahoo and need to tinker

Going a different direction as I have to figure out the deck before the next steps



Painted flat Ultimate black, decided to do a hand painted ‘neutral’ tan, kind of randomly



Then some burnt sienna on a Q tip, again kinda random and less where walking would occur.


Then some Burnt umber in undisturbed corners and nooks


Idea is a well worn wooden deck surface that hints at past glory but shows signs of age




Honestly I love working with oil paints

looks really good to me !! The hard part for you is that that ship is nothing like a real wood one.. so even harder to recreate ! You did a great job !

The neutral tan was genius. Gave you a light enough base to build on then excellent stuff with the oils.

I agree with you, Oils really bring out the artist in a modeler. Well done

Yes this is good insight
It is easier to go from light and add layers darker on top
The black underneath let me have some variation and show through that worked well in my favour
The layers just painted themselves really

Oil is dry now and I can proceed with the staircase
Added some railing detail with round styrene and got the top rail CA’d down
I have the curved rail extra long right now so I can work out where to finish it

Boy I have hit the absolute jackpot in reference for this build
Model ship world there is a nice English gent who has converted a 1/72 plastic model into a gorgeous styrene/wood version of the pearl
He has made his own ropes for rigging and addressed much of the modifications I was planning, right down to figures
All superbly done with much references to the movie ship

I went and added stair treads to the main staircases to match the movie ship like the reference had done
So much for leaving it alone
